VPS Architecture designed and helped install the roof-top garden at Cedar Hall Elementary School along with students, parents and school officials. George Link, said the Green Grid system was new to his staff but that the process went smoothly.
A crane raised pallets full of plants to the roof and were then were placed strategically by VPS employees and volunteers from the school. The garden is designed to manage storm water runoff, reduce heat radiating from the building as well as extend the roof’s life. The garden plants vary but include species of sedum, allium and chives.
The school’s second floor hallway runs alongside the garden, which students can access easily for science classes and learning growth cycles. The garden will provide hands on learning for the students.
Link said the garden will be watered twice a week through the summer, but after that, the garden should be self-sufficient from rain water.
